About the Event

Framed Emotion

by Gino Severin

‘Framed Emotion’ is a departure from my work shown in previous exhibitions.

As I’m comfortable in abstract & landscape work, I decided to challenge myself with new work depicting what it is to be human.

It started whilst I was reviewing a short film I co-directed in 2019 called ‘Anatomy of an Arrangement’, an art house movie where many scenes were set for an emotional response.

This work led to exploring more of the emotional condition, seeking to do this through a monochromatic lens utilising the female form.

I do love working with colour, but I was seeking to mute colour and see whether I could hone in on the expression or emotion, allowing the work to speak for itself.

I used only one colour with black and white to achieve a style that is reminiscent of a monochromatic photo with a specific colour hue. In essence I wanted to give the emotions depicted in the work a singular colour reference. In doing this though, I discovered hundreds of varying colours and hues which gives each piece its depth and hints of realism.

It’s really a representation of what I feel those emotions would look like if all physical expression was removed. Of course colours that represent emotions would be different for everyone, but for me this is what I see.

As you walk through the exhibit, you’ll see each piece is titled as a statement on a feeling or emotion. The pieces titled “I’m not alone” or “Wish come true” can have multiple meanings and convey many different emotions at once.

Ultimately, as humans, we are here as an expression of life. We’re here to live our lives through our feelings and experiences. Our “e-motions” are literally our “energy in motion”. They at times get in the way, but most often help us deal with what’s going on at any one time. Embrace them, acknowledge them and work through them with others. You will be better for it.
